As of VMware VirtualCenter 2.5 Update 1, ESX Server 3i systems can only be added to an HA cluster if the system has swap enabled.

This article applies to:

  • VMware ESXi 3.5.x Embedded
  • VMware ESXi 3.5.x Installable
  • VMware VirtualCenter 2.5.x

ESX 3i Servers with swap not enabled will show the following message(s):

An error occured during configuration of the HA agent of the host.
HA Agent has an error : Host in HA cluster must have userworld swap enabled.

To enable swap on the ESX 3i Server:

1. In VirtualCenter, select the ESX 3i server with the error.
2. Click the "Configuration" tab page and click "Advanced Settings"
3. Select "ScratchConfig"
4. Set the data store for ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation to a valid directory with more than 1GB to hold the swapfile. This location can be local or shared storage.
5.Select the ScratchConfig.ConfiguredSwapState option.
6. Click OK.
7. reboot the 3i server to apply the changes.

What goes in the ScratchConfig.ConfiguredSwapState option?
Rynardt Spies  - ScratchConfig.ConfiguredSwapState     |2008-12-18 00:52:33
This is a boolean value. In other words "True" or "False". it simply "Enables" or "Disables" the scratch partition. If it's disabled you should get the "HA Agent has an error : Host in HA cluster must have userworld swap enabled" error when trying to configure HA.

Also, the first time you power on the ESX Server 3i host it creates and enables one 4GB VFAT scratch partition for system swap, providing that this partition is not present on another disk. The ESXi host uses system swap for its own operation. System swap is different
from virtual machine swap.

If the host does not have a scratch partition, the host uses 512MB more memory than it would otherwise use. If you do not want the host to use this additional memory, keep the scratch partition enabled.

Hi,

Thanks for the instruction. You had guided me half way through the solution, though I only had one problem with the placement of the userworld swap file. I had fine the solution or recommendation for that only at VMWARE ESXi - Host in HA Cluster must have userworld swap enabled
I thought I would return your favor and post back on here so other readers can find out what is the best option for them in regards of the swap placement.

Keep up the good work :).
